Style of Sound Vol. 3 Mix & Compilation

You’re invited to help us celebrate the launch of a brand new Style of Sound compilation on the 15th December 2017.

The Style of Sound Vol. 3 is a collection of songs which was compiled to help you understand the lives of those two cheeky girls called Emerald & Doreen, the inspiration behind the label of the same name.

Style of Sound editor John Noi recently travelled to Berlin to spend an evening out with the girls with two tasks in mind. First, he wanted to find out what a typical day of theirs looks like. And second, he wanted find out what songs made up the soundtrack of their lives.

And why the journey all the way to Germany?

He’d heard from several sources that Emerald and Doreen exude awe-inspiring happiness, and he wondered if the music they listened to had anything to do with their state of being, which of course, he found out to be totally true.

The results of this excursion were documented in a 77-minute mix that transports listeners to 18 Emerald & Doreen moments, moments which defined this special evening and ultimately helped explain the meaning of happiness.

And the Outcome of this Trip?

Looking closely at the 18 songs that make up the mix, John discovered that happiness in life does not come from listening to a single music genre.

Instead, he realised hapiness evolves from listening to a combination of different styles whether it be techno, house, disco, indie dance, soul, hiphop, industrial, etc that creates true bliss — a hallmark of the Emerald & Doreen label and the Style of Sound Vol.3.

Experience the Happiness

We invite you to sample what true happiness sounds by playing the video above which was especially created for this compilation by none other than Emerald & Doreen! The video will give you a taste of what it feels like to spend time with the two girls, plus inspire you to check out the individual artists which make up the release.

Emerald & Doreen 200 x Jerry Bouthier

On the 24th March, 2017 the Style of Sound unveiled a special exhibition to celebrate the launch of Emerald & Doreen’s 2nd Label Retrospective Emerald & Doreen 200.

The static exhibition consisted of 17 tailor made bomber jackets focusing on the artwork of the songs released in the Emerald & Doreen 200 compilation. Designed by the Style of Sound, the jackets were inspired by the strong links of music and fashion inherent in the compilation’s track list.

As visitors sipped on tasty cocktails, they were invited to try on the jackets, while the continuous mix included in the compilation, mixed by none other than French dj, producer, and sound-designer Jerry Bouthier, played on multiple video screens, taking visitors on a special journey into the visual world created by videographers Emerald & Doreen.

Jerry is no stranger to the label, having mixed the excellent Emerald & Doreen compilations Voyage Sauvage Vol.1  and Voyage Sauvage Vol.2. Of his recent collaboration with the label, Jerry says. “I think every single track is worth its salt, not a dull one in sight, that’s great, well done, that’s what we want, the best of E&D.”

Throughout the evening, revelers sailed across a make shift dance floor filled with shoegazing house blended in with electronica and lyrical synth pop not to mention nostalgic italo-disco, esoteric ambient, melodic prog-techno, dreamy indie, and everything else in between – all given Jerry’s special touch.

If you couldn’t make it to the exhibition, thankfully you can experience the evening for yourself. First, make yourself a cocktail. Second, take a close look at the jackets below. Third, play the video below. And lastly, dance to the mix prepared by Jerry. Enjoy!

Smell the music and join us for a special exhibition we are hosting this Friday with German future pop label Emerald & Doreen!

As years have shown, you can’t keep us away from Emerald & Doreen for very long. And it’s easy to understand why.

Germany’s Emerald and Doreen have a habit of releasing addictively good music, and like a tasty cocktail, you can never take just one sip.

Following on from our first mix for Emerald & Doreen, we dived into the label’s latest collection of releases to create a mega mix filled with 84-minutes of pure bliss which traverse everything from nu disco to electonica to dream pop; in other words, the diverse and different sounds which make Emerald & Doreen one of the world’s best indie and dance music labels.

The Music-Based Fragrances

To celebrate the 18 songs which make up the Style of Sound Vol 2 compilation and mix, we created a set of fragrances which when sprayed, emit the sound of the song the fragrance is based on, allowing you to smell the music.

Each song is guaranteed to stay in your mind, at least as long as the fragrance stays in the air around you 😉

Click on any of the fragrance bottles below to sample what’s behind the smell, but first, check out the excellent video Emerald & Doreen put together which sums up the mood and tone of the compilation and mix.

The Mix

The Unexpected Art of Falling Unconscious

The Unexpected Art from Falling Unconscious in a new installation piece by John Noi which tells a sensory story of what happens when a graffiti artist accidentally touches an electrical line and falls to the ground unconscious.

In the exhibition, visitors are invited to step into a room where they are presented with a photograph of the graffiti artist, the exact moment before he falls to the ground.

After a few moments, the room suddenly turns black, and the soundtrack of what comes after the fall gently fades in – for the next 63-minutes.

The soundtrack, mixed by Noi, is inspired by the sounds the graffiti artist experiences as a result of the electrical currents enveloping his body in complete darkness.

The images and thoughts which appear in each visitor’s mind as a result of the soundtrack – and being immersed in complete darkness – ultimately become the artwork of what occurs when one falls unconscious.

Visitor’s are invited to experience this exhibition at the Style of Sound studio spaces. Spaces limited to just six people per 63-minute session.

Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Painterly Impressions of Flow Festival 2016

This month we introduce the painterly works of Style of Sound founder John Noi which were created from memories of his recent visit to Flow Festival 2016, an event which took place in the old power plant area of Suvilahti, Helsinki.

As one of the major Nordic music festivals, this edition of Flow Festival attracted over 75,000 people who were treated to three days of cutting edge music from acts ranging from New Order to Liima to M83, + diverse food offerings, and art created by local Finnish talent.

While many music festivals often end up sharing the same acts, the one thing which truly makes Flow Festival stand apart is its visitors, a stylish group of people who know how to come together to create a good time for one – and all.

In a series of 15 paintings, Noi captures the essence of Flow Festival 2016 by documenting various characters he stumbled upon at the event. Each painting reveals different aspects of how the modern festival goer spends their time from hour-to-hour, either in groups or in solitary moments alone.

Noi comments, “It was refreshing to see an amazing group of people who made an effort to show off their individual style – influenced by music and the culture of Finland. I don’t think I saw anyone who’d made a dreadful visit to the festival must-haves section of Primark.”

Visitors are invited to view the collection of 15 paintings by visiting the Style of Sound Helsinki, or by clicking on the button below.

The next edition of Flow Festival happens from the 11th-13th August 2017 in Helsinki.

The Style of Sound Summer Showcase Featuring Go Satta

This year’s Style of Sound Summer Showcase brings together a collection of works from Detroit-native Moriah Nixon and Londoner Lee Boyd, otherwise known as Go Satta.

The duo have been making music together since 2013 and by combining their hugely eclectic musical tastes, they have created a sonic vision of the future.

The result? Intelligent, punchy, future pop, shot through with heavy reggae basslines, funky beats, disco grooves and unexpected diversions.

In this exhibition Lee and Moriah worked closely with the Style of Sound to produce a series of nine specially formulated paints, which when applied in bulk to any surface, reveals a ghostly image filled with colour. When the haptic paint panels are touched, one of nine songs from Go Satta are emitted from the paint as if by magic.

The sensation of each image is said to evoke feelings of the sublime and on occasion, the awe-inspiring power of “hot synth action.”

Visitors are invited to experience the Summer Showcase at Style of Sound London to experience the Go Satta exhibition firsthand. The exhibition runs until 7 September 2016. Arrive early to avoid the queues.

The Enigmatic Sounds of Natalie Beridze

In this exhibition, the Style of Sound whisks you away into electronic music artist Natalie Beridze’s world, where we’ve brought to life the enigmatic description used to describe her recent album ‘Guliagava’ in nine graphic panels.

For the last 12 years, Natalie Beridze has performed live concerts worldwide and is known as first female electronic music artist from Georgia, having released music in Europe on Max.E, Monika Enterprise, CMYK, Laboratory Instinct, Chainmusic, DADO Records and Apollo Records.

Like her previous albums, ‘Guliagava’ was recorded in Tbilisi. The Georgian metropolis is far from pop-cultural arteries, nevertheless its youth observes precisely what is happening outside, and installs that otherness in their own world with a delicate hand.

Come to the exhibition at Style of Sound Tbilisi to discover Natalie Beridze’s ‘Guliagava’. The exhibition runs until 31 August 2015.

Style of Sound Vol. 1 Mix x Compilation on Emerald & Doreen

In anticipation of the forthcoming Style of Sound Vol. 1 compilation coming out on Emerald & Doreen Records, we invite you to join us for a private viewing of the exclusive video created especially for the release at the Style of Sound Berlin.

The video, assembled by the talented Emerald and Doreen in Germany, contains art and fashion footage sourced from a variety of archives which is meant to bring to life the spirit and ethos of the compilation.

The mix and compilation, put together by Style of Sound editor John Noi, is inspired by the dance floor of the future, a dance floor filled with the upbeat rhythms of indie dance, nu disco, italo disco, techno, and house music, where two amazing girls called Emerald & Doreen take you by the hand and spin you into a heady oblivion.

As part of the private view, the Style of Sound has created 16 bottles of wine (one for each artist on the compilation) which are meant to be sampled as each artist is heard on the mix. Each wine is said to induce 16 different euphoric effects as if experiencing the mix on an actual dance floor.
