A Parisian long established in London, Jerry Bouthier is passionate about music in its many forms and applications. His ties with Kitsuné, the legendary Vivienne Westwood, London’s infamous BoomBox club night as well as his JBAG productions/remixes and A&R duties for Continental records have made his name a regular fixture in the worlds of music and fashion.

1. WHAT’S YOUR PROCESS FOR CHOOSING SONGS FOR A MIX?

I’ve always felt music was here to uplift the soul, give you a boost, the energy that your everyday life doesn’t always provide. So I’m after meaningful pieces with strong, interesting melodies that haven’t been heard a million times, striking tracks communicating emotions through the language of music that you feel like going back to. Something a little magical or challenging has to happen along the way. Music should be imaginative and make you think or dream. On paper the democratisation of music is a great idea, but in reality it’s a bit of a disaster, the world is flooded by mediocre tunes produced by djs and computer programers with limited musical skills, over-quantized and soulless, sounding alike because they were made with the same machines and reduced ambition. As Keith Richards put it ’the market for people who can’t tell one note from another is huge’. Most people making music these days are after money or celebrity status, expecting results almost instantly. When you know how technically easy it has become to make records, it can be distressing to hear what people release these days, there’s no quality control exercised whatsoever. So much of it is shockingly poor and devoid of any palpable emotion, too often just a collection of programming tricks favoured by djs for their effect on the dancefloor, yet devoid of any personal sensibility, ‘me-too’ tunes that blatantly copy what’s currently popular. Talent still shines through but that means having to sift through tons of music to unearth exceptional gems, the name of the game for djs really… as a result curiosity is key, today more than ever.

2. YOUR LIFESTYLE IN FIVE WORDS?

Can I have six? Discovering. Learning. Creating. Celebrating. Sharing. Caring.

3. WHO DO YOU RESPECT?

Those who do things out of love, friendship or loyalty – rather than for the sake of dollars. Those with principles who are true to their word, put money where their mouth is and resist facility.

4. WHAT BRINGS A TEAR TO YOUR EYE?

Injustice… innocent people abused by worldwide greed. And my stupid little brother Tom taking his own life all those years ago. You never truly manage to get over something like that.

5. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LONDON?

The melting pot of people, totally non-judgemental by nature… and necessity, the capital of Europe as I like to call it. And the fact that rock’n’roll is in its genes.

6. WHAT SOUND BEST DESCRIBES LONDON?

To me it’s not so much about a sound but about attitude, the music around it keeps morphing…There’s no other place like it.

7. FAVOURITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS?

The George & Dragon in the heart of Shoreditch, sadly about to shut down for good, one day they’ll make a film about how important that gay, fashiony pub was to alternative culture and electro in London.

8. WHAT IS BEAUTY?

Wow, that’s a question! Nature and science’s spontaneity? Without sounding depressing, there isn’t much beauty to be found in what our society reflects and stands for these days, consumers society is a bit of a nightmare come true really.

9. HOW DO YOU HEAL A BROKEN HEART?

With music… and positivity. Some songs remain very special for the rest of your life.

10. DO YOU BELIEVE IN ‘LOVE AT FIRST SITE’?

Desire at first sight is one thing, however I believe true love goes beyond attraction and takes time to grow strong.

11. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?

Anything that has life and craftsmanship to it, that feels genuine and human although made with machines like most music today. I’ve always been more about collecting songs than worshiping artists. Again it’s not so much about a sound but feeling that the artist means it and wants to communicate a musical emotion that touches the soul, not just copycat or make a quick buck. Check my Heart & Soul mixtapes, all my best electronic findings end up in there.

10. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE CITIES AROUND THE WORLD?

My favourite destination has to be Tokyo, out of this world, the best food on the planet and such kind people. Paris is my original hometown so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. I’ve been lucky to have the chance to dj all over the place and have unforgettable memories of Sydney, Johanesburg, Hong Kong, Moscow, Amsterdam, Singapore, Vienna, Milan, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Beirut, Jakarta, Bali, Kiev, Seoul, Cairo… it’s so compelling and enlightening to sample different cultures. However London remains at the top for me, if you’re into music, there’s no beating it.

11. IF YOU WERE ONLY ABLE TO LISTEN TO ONE MUSIC ALBUM AGAIN WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The Jacksons 5 ‘Greatest Hits’? The Cure ‘Faith’? The KLF ‘Chill Out’? Phoenix ‘United’? 2 Many DJs ‘Radio Soulwax 2’? The XX’s first album? So many options, it’s almost impossible to decide!

12. WHAT’S MISSING IN YOUR LIFE?

Sunshine on a daily basis (and the sea nearby!) would be a must, but that’d probably mean lazier too.

13. IS YOUR GLASS USUALLY HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY?

Mm it’d depend how much sleep I’ve had the night before haha, no, half-full, definitely, you’ve got to believe in your dreams, if not what’s the point?

14. ARE YOU A HUGGER OR NON-HUGGER?

Definitely a hugger, the simplest, most natural way to physically communicate warmth and care to the people who matter to you.

15. WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?

Hope for the better, prepare for the worse.

16. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2016?

The usual music stuff I work on, writing/producing/remixing in the studio with Andrea for JBAG etc, putting together dreamy mixtapes and evocative soundtracks for the catwalk and brands, helping out at my favourite labels Kitsune and Emerald & Doreen, releasing more quality EPs on my imprint Continental… dj gigs and a new music project that will be different, watch this space 🙂
