Sarah P

Sarah P, former frontwoman of Keep Shelley in Athens, creates minimalistic pop music which harks back to all that was brilliant in the 90s. Looking at Sarah P’s solo music to date, one can’t help but to notice a dark edge, something which is apparent in her latest video Dirty Sunday, a song which makes a point about working in the music industry as a woman.

We recently had a chance to catch up with Sarah P to pose a few questions about her life in Berlin and music, but first, check out Dirty Sunday to get a taste of what she’s been working on recently.

1. SO WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND DIRTY SUNDAY?

Being a woman in this crazy industry of music is just as hard as swimming with sharks. Being a woman in this crazy industry of music and wanting to succeed because you think you’ve got it is just as hard as admitting that you don’t have equal chances as the man you’re might be competing with. Women in this crazy industry of music are often being reduced to their looks, their boobs or to ‘that time of the month’. No matter if we’re talking about women managers, A&Rs, producers, engineers, artists, publishers, booking agents, promoters. Through a video, I speak my truth, I tell a story.

2. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO WOMEN MUSICIANS TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THE INDUSTRY?

To be bold, stay true to themselves, speak loud and never ever let anyone patronize them. To know their rights as performers and composers and to not close any “sparkly” deal – the longer, harder road pays off so much better & in so many ways, especially artistically. Definitely better than any advance money. But I guess this advice suits any young person that wants to enter the art field in general and no matter the gender.

3. YOUR LIFESTYLE IN FIVE WORDS?

Introspective, private, ethical, independent, passionate.

4. WHO DO YOU RESPECT?

Every person, until they make me not to.

5. HOW DO YOU DECIDE YOUR SONG TITLES?

I guess it’s a natural process. I write the lyrics first. Normally, there should be a word or a phrase that stands out or sums up the story I’m telling. Honestly, I never spent too much thought on this! 😊

6. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BERLIN?

It’s casual and whimsical at the same time.

7. FAVOURITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT OF TOWN GUESTS?

When my mom visited last year, we walked such long distances. On a good day, it is really worth walking around and seeing the scenery changing. Berlin’s streets are super flat and every district is so different. It feels like a big film studio which is very cool.

8. WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?

Find yourself and then be it.

9. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?

To be honest, I know it may sound lame and snob, but since I’m putting my album together, that’s the only music I listen to. After I tell myself I’m through for the day, I honestly cannot listen to anything, but silence. I hope this doesn’t come out as creepy and egocentric – I guess music is my work and taking an off from it is healthy. Other than that, Kate Bush 4 life!

10. WHEN YOU TRAVEL DO YOU PACK TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE?

Thank you for this question. I really feel that I have mastered the art of packing as an adult. I guess I pack much enough, for my standards. Like much, but not too much, aka much enough. It feels good to know you’re prepared for anything that may happen. Also, for the sake of being the mom of the travel group. You know, “I told you it would be chilly, your jacket is under the pants, behind the socks and undies”.

11. WHAT’S ONE FASHION TREND YOU HOPE DOES NOT COME BACK?

I’m cool with it all, except the thongs display.

12. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM TO COOK?

I grew up in a house with a mom that makes the best pies ever (maybe after gran’s spinach pie) and a dad who is a pizza masterchef, so these are two things I love to make because they feel like home. Apart from that, I also love baking cakes. I guess I could call myself an amateur birthday cake maker – that’s something I really enjoy.

13. TO FEEL RESTED, HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP DO YOU NEED EACH NIGHT?

It depends on the night – today I woke up at 4.30am, which means I slept for less than five hours, yet I’m feeling pretty good. I guess that seven hours mark a good night’s sleep, with no fatigue attacks in between bedtime.

14. WHO PERFORMS MORE RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS THAN ANYONE YOU KNOW?

My husband to be. He is the most genuinely nice person I know. Mostly, he’s the most genuinely nice person towards me. From bringing me coffee in bed to being so patient and understanding with it all. It is not that easy to live with a creative freak, even harder when you work with them as well. So, yeah, the greatest respect and my whole heart goes to my partner. Also to my gran who is a girl-power girl and one of my greatest influences.

15. WHAT SOUND DRIVES YOU CRAZY?

People calling each other “bitch”, disrespect in general, and fanaticism.

16. WHAT’S SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT YOU HOPE WILL NEVER CHANGE?

I hope that everything changes, as I evolve into a better version of myself – as it’s happened to me and hopefully, will keep on happening till the day I die. We’re meant to evolve and are constantly on a movement.

17. WHAT MUSIC HAS MADE A BIG IMPACT ON YOU?

Dark wave, post punk. The biggest emotions can be expressed in the most simple, presumably apathetic way. No need to scream or shout. No need to be violent or encourage violence to prove a point. It’s a very beautiful, romantic scene that has definitely shaped me since primary school. And angel Tim Buckley whom I wanted to marry (although I knew he was long dead).

18. DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF ACQUANITANCES OR JUST A SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS?

You bet I have many acquaintances – social media has made us “friends” with so many people. Also, truth to be told, my job requires so much networking (dreadful at times, fun at others) and so the circle grows bigger and bigger. But as every circle, my center is very close and intimate.

19. WHAT BORES YOU?

Self-absorbed people and those who have nothing to say.

20. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN 2016?

New music, new words, new images – I’m working with a team of creative geniuses to create something that’s not just music, but a well-rounded piece & a statement. I cannot say more, but it is really exciting!
