When travelling to a new country, having to pay a tip can be an unwelcome surprise for those not accustomed to the practice. Even in cultures where tipping has been going on forever, people are starting to wonder whether or not they should leave a tip, especially in light of news that some staff don’t even receive tips which are left for them.

We asked a selection of readers what they thought about this practice and 160+ responded.

Should tipping be banned?

Yes - 24%
No - 49%
Don't Know - 26%
[ult_team img_hover_eft=”” name=”Kevin says…”]Why should it be banned? It isn’t mandatory to tip, but if I’m happy with the service a waiter or anyone gave me, I happily tip.[/ult_team]
[ult_team img_hover_eft=”” name=”Paco says…”]Yes it should be banned. Most restaurants pay their waiters as little as $3.50 an hour because the waiters were making so much from tips. It started off as a nice gesture, but now it’s pretty mandatory since it’s the majority of the waiter’s paycheck.[/ult_team]
[ult_team img_hover_eft=”” name=”Patient Zero says…”]Maybe cow tipping! Otherwise, Fuck no! Tipping should be culturally ingrained. Don’t ever come to NYC with that mentality, you should be tipping 20% at least, no matter the quality of service. I don’t live there anymore but that’s just how it is. So for any of you tourists out there planning on visiting NYC, if you want food without the “special sauce” you had best tip![/ult_team]

How about you? Do you think tipping should be banned?
