Animal Collective (Anco to their die hard fans) recently came out with a new album called Painting With which has received quite positive reviews not only amongst indie music circles, but especially with their fans. In this post, we take a look at what traits make up a true Animal Collective fan.
My buddy whose never seen Animal Collective: “It’s like seeing someone naked for the first time: the lights go down and you just don’t know”

The Basic Low Down
Both men and women enjoy Animal Collective in equal measures, especially in the USA, where most of their fans reside. However, looking at their fans on a city-by-city basis, they have a huge fan base in Berlin, not to mention the rest of Germany as this list shows:
|No.||City||% of Total Anco Fans|
|3||New York, USA||5|
|5||Mexico City, Mexico||3|
|8||Los Angeles, USA||2|
Themes Amongst Anco Fans
There are three themes that truly define an Animal Collective fan. Firstly, they all seem to be Pitchfork readers, looking up to the music mecca for daily music inspiration. For them, if it ain’t on Pitchfork then it probably ain’t good.
Secondly, Animal Collective fans enjoy listening to bands which are made up of animal names (the hint is in the band name right?). Prime examples include:
Lastly, Animal Collective fans seem to relish psychedelic gimmics which aim to re-create the effect of seeing the band live as seen in this trippy Painting With slip mat which pulsates when illuminated with a strobe light.
How do they look like?
Despite being a collective, Animal Collective fans aren’t as easy to spot as Kanye West fans. However should you see someone with an alt-casual hair style covering portions of their face with an Animal Collective record, you’ve probably got an Animal Collective fan right in front of you. Here’s a few examples of them out in the wild:
17 days to go. I wanted the Geologist cover. Sadly, global interest in Animal Collective has been on the steady decline as you can see in this chart from Google Trends. Whilst the release of Painting With has created a sudden uptick of interest in Animal Collective, it’s unlikely to reach the popularity levels the band once enjoyed circa 2009.
As one person commented on Twitter…
even daft punk can’t make animal collective sound good
